Historical points of interest in Harpers Ferry

 

  • Antietam National Battlefield (Sharpsburg, MD) - The site of the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, fought on September 17, 1862. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Harpers Ferry.

  • True Treats Historical Candy Shop - Claims to be the nation’s only research-based historic candy store, selling forgotten bites from the past.

 

  • John Brown’s Fort: The site of the famous abolitionist’s last stand during his 1859 raid.

  • The Point: The meeting point of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers with views of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.

 

  • St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church: A historic church that served the community during the Civil War.

 

  • The Harper House - One of the oldest surviving structures in Harpers Ferry, dating back to the late 18th century. It played a significant role during the Civil War.

 

  • Jefferson Rock - Named after Thomas Jefferson, who stood here in 1783 and declared the view as worth a trip across the Atlantic. It provides a stunning view of the confluence of the rivers and surrounding mountains.

 

  • Bolivar Heights - Located just west of Harpers Ferry, this ridge was the site of significant Civil War battles and provides panoramic views of the area.

 

  • White Hall Tavern - Since the 1850s, this has been a place people come to debate, drink and discuss local events. Very well-preserved, its authentic interior
